‘School on Wheels'

Taking Education to Kombai–Perungadu

Kombai–Perungadu is a remote tribal settlement hidden deep within the thick, untouched forests of Kodaikanal—only 12 km from the town, yet worlds away from access to education, healthcare, and basic amenities. Here, childhood unfolds in silence and seclusion, with little exposure to learning, hygiene, or the life skills every child deserves.

In 2024, My School Satya Surabhi set this silence in motion with the launch of ‘School on Wheels’, an initiative born from a powerful conviction: that education must travel to the child when the child cannot travel to education. What began with 25 eager young learners has steadily grown into a transformative community movement—one that brings knowledge, nutrition, creativity, and care directly to Kombai–Perungadu’s doorstep.

Each week, the travelling classroom arrives like a burst of colour and possibility. Children gather around to learn reading, writing, and numeracy in a warm, interactive environment where games, songs, and stories turn lessons into joy. Alongside academics, the initiative places vital emphasis on hygiene and health. Families participate in practical sessions on hand washing, oral hygiene, safe drinking water, and waste management. To support growing bodies, every child also receives weekly protein supplements—milk, eggs, lentils, and pulses—ensuring that learning is strengthened by nutrition.

But, ‘School on Wheels’ moves far beyond textbooks. It opens doors to expression through art, craft, and simple sports activities that build confidence, teamwork, and physical well-being. The initiative also engages parents and caregivers through regular community meetings that reinforce the value of education, child development, and health. Awareness materials and conversations help families understand why consistent schooling can rewrite a child’s future.

At its core, ‘School on Wheels’ stands for inclusion. The program is free, open to all, and free of any religious, caste, or creed-based influence—ensuring that every child enters a space of safety, respect, and belonging.

More than a vehicle, ‘School on Wheels’ is a lifeline—carrying hope, knowledge, and possibility across forest paths and rugged terrain. It is a bridge between isolation and opportunity, lighting the way to a brighter future for the children of Kombai–Perungadu, one journey at a time.
